Welcome back to another year at Francis Scott Key or to a brand NEW year at Francis Scott Key! In second grade, we work very hard in every subject and learn many skills throughout each subject. In language arts, our unit of study is, Sharing Stories. Sharing stories can be done in a variety of ways. We will read about how others share stories. There are also many skills we will learn and expand upon. Nouns, verbs, sentence structure, word analysis, vocabulary and lots and lots of writing! As parents, be sure your child is reading orally daily! Not only will your child's fluency increase, but reading enhances their vocabulary. With better vocabulary, your child becomes a better thinker and a better writer! In math we will be working on demonstrating proficiency with addition and subtraction basic facts using a variety of strategies. We move quickly in math so gear up your addition and subtraction facts and get ready for two and even-shhhhhh- three digit addition/subtraction! Regrouping, solving for the unknown, (algebra), and many other skills are taught in my class to get a jump start for third grade. I will be working with groups of students to extend their skills once they show mastery in each skill area, as well as reinforcing skills so that the students will show mastery so they will be able to extend their learning. I know they will enjoy the challenge! Remember, we want our children to take hold of a skill and see how far they can run! Our social studies unit focuses on Code of Conduct. This is very important to each student to become aware of their behavior throughout the school year as to how to carry themself as a responsible person in the classroom and their community. I am holding each parent accountable, with me, for making sure we deliver positive, good behavior to our children and want our children to be responsible for their own behavior. I want to invite any parent who would like to come into my classroom and volunteer their time and talent with the students . It is a great feeling knowing that education is important to parents and students enjoy having and working with their friends mom or dad ! Approximately, each month your child will bring home a book order from Scholastic Book Club. You can either send the form and money/check to class or order online. If you choose to order online, you will need my username and password. My username is Macklinsclass and the password is 1234. If there is a problem, let me know. Please be sure your child is working on Study Island daily! I will check their progress throughout the year and may even assign certain skills as a homework assignment. If you do not have a computer, let me know and your child can work on a skill during the class day. ***REMINDERS*** August
